This is a new beta feature of Google, Google Suggest. This is pretty neat cause if you start typing in a word, it “auto-completes” except not with entries that you have entered before, but what are the most common google searches. If you are searching for something, most likely, someone else has too. So, you can look at the suggestions and also see how many people have search for it. When I tried “young nak” I got “young nak em” and “young nak english ministry” and say that 18,400 and 3,490 (respectively) have search for those terms. That’s helpful to know what people type into google to get to your website.
If I’m not explaining Google Suggest well or you have more questions, they have a FAQ about it. One guy took the Google Suggest searches and automated a program to show which word of every letter was most commonly searched on Google.
This is what the creator of Google Suggest says on his invention:
“The project [Google Suggest] stemmed from an idea I had a few months ago, and since then I’ve been working on it in my 20% time, which is a program where Google allows their employees to devote 20% of their working hours to any project they choose. What’s really amazed me about this project is how in a matter of months, working on my own, I was able to go from a lunch table conversation to launching a new service.”
– Kevin Gibbs, Google Software Engineer, I’ve got a suggestion, December 10, 2004
That’s an incredible idea for a company to give their workers 20% of their time as freedom to do whatever project they would like. That’s really allowing them to think outside the box, rather than just doing what you’re commanded to do. Neat!
