Travel Tips

Ok, being right in the middle of summer, this might be a little late for some but real timely for others. Traveling a LITTLE more than the average person, I wanted to write down some tips to share with readers (and those that I can just refer them to my blog in the future!):

- The best travel deal site is kayak.com (Thanks Katherin). It’s like expedia.com, if you’ve ever used them, except that it’s more like google for travel sites. What do I mean? Well, instead of finding all the best fares and booking if for you, all it does is go to hundreds of travel sites and finds the best fare and then sends you to their website to book it. Why is that better? Because unlike expedia, they don’t charge you extra (handling fee). And besides that extra cost, I’ve found that the fares on it are MUCH cheaper because it includes discount websites and not just the major airlines. The best thing about it is the interface. It’s very clean and very fast and reminds me of google.

- If you can, fly JetBlue. It’s cheap and it’s the best! I won’t write anymore on that, since I’ve already written on it.

- Do you priceline? The best thing to priceline are hotels. Many of us have gotten four star hotels for $30-$40, regularly (the worst part of that is that sometimes the parking with the four star hotels are like $12!). Priceline for airlines aren’t really worth it because you can’t pick times, just the date. But, for hotels, it’s great! So, you might be saying, “I already knew about priceline … that’s old news!” Yeah, so, here comes the travel tip. Have you ever pricelined and though, man, I have no idea what to bid … or maybe you bid and got it, but thought, “I should have gone cheaper!” Introducing www.biddingfortravel.com. This is a GREAT website cause it’s a forum of people who have pricelined and for what price they got it for in what area. So, for hotels, if you pick this area for this price and this star, you will get this hotel … It has helped tremendously! If you take the time to read their FAQ, they’ll even give you priceline tips (like rebidding in the same area without changing something).

Ok, so on to some travelling tips:
- Always, always, always, ask for a bulkhead seat or an exit row seat (unless your flying first class, of course!). They will only assign these at the airport, so as you check in, ask for it. Why? Because you get MUCH more leg room then all the other seats. I think it’s even better to have a middle bulkhead seat than an aisle regular seat.

- Did you know that on every airplane, there are magazines for you to read? I’m not talking about the Delta magazine or the Sky Mall magazine. I’m talking about REAL mags. Usually it’s the FIRST overhead bin and the LAST overhead bin. As I’m boarding the plane, I ALWAYS look inside the first bin to grab a couple of magazines. Or if you forget, you can always ask the stewardess for them.

- If you travel on high travel days (during the holidays) or you see that the flight is very full, go and ask to be put on the list to give up your seat. This is assuming that it’s okay for you to arrive late. This is how to get some good flight vouchers for future flights. The family and I have done this in the past and one time, we got $500 per person (me, Kathy, Kailey and Emily) of vouchers and we used that $2000 for the whole year in travel.

- BYOH = Bring your own headset. The one on the airplanes really stink! Especially if you are gonna watch a movie or watch DirecTV (JetBlue), bring your own. It’s MUCH louder and cleaner.

This is just the tip of the iceberg. I know there are some travel “experts” among us, so, contribute in the comments.

Another place to call and compare prices..Flight Centre. They have locations everywhere, (ol’ Pasadena – Downtown LA) you can find the nearest one to you at http://www.flightcentre.com.

I found that Flight Centre, offers cheaper rates than most places. They also offer hotel accommodations and car rentals at comparable prices.

I usually call them, and speak with their representative, rather than going into their offices or their website. I personally think the rep has to-the-minute deals than their website may post, that’s just me. :0) So convenient, too…seal the deal via fax,and in return an e-ticket.

    Check them out…
