Nathan’s a Boy!

12 August 2005 126 views 7 Comments

As mentioned before, we have many challenges of parenting a boy with two older sisters. And for the update (since many ask me in person), he is STILL peeing sitting down and doesn’t stand peeing YET! Pastor Jim-Bob always tells me to throw some Cherrios into the toliet and tell him to aim at them. I don’t think he’s there yet.

So, here’s the other challenge. Nathan is ALWAYS carrying around a purse and playing with Barbie toys. We have bought him many train sets, cars, Power Rangers action figures and he likes it for like 5 mins and returns to the strollers and purses. Again, MY BOY will NOT be a tom-girl (is there such a thing?).

This morning, I was trying to teach Nathan how to shoot a pretend gun by pointing his finger and making sound effects. Here’s his attempt:

But then he wouldn’t do it anymore, and then picked up a Barbie purse and started to hit me with it! What a girl!

Then he just went back and started playing with the purse! :(

Man, what can I do!?!?!?!?!

EDIT: Just got back from outside teaching Kailey how to play handball (trying to keep up with Pastor Dave’s kids!). So, the question is, how come I don’t mind and even prefer Kailey to be a tom-boy, but I don’t want Nathan to be a tom-girl???

What a beautiful boy you have. And that is a nice purse.

Most of the times kids grow out of these things.
I don’t think you are worried, but I wouldn’t be. Pretty soon he’ll be killing boys like real men. :)

I am sure he’ll be fine.

How old is he? He’s still young. Once he starts school and hangs out with other boys his age, he’ll catch up. Hey, I used to play with guns, and my brother used to dress up in my mom’s clothes and heels. Wait, that’s way TMI of my brother. Well, my dad was away working in the Middle East at that time, and my brother lacked a male role model.

hi pk! it’s perfectly ok for a boy to play with dolls and it’s perfectly ok for a girl to play with train sets. let’s not reinforce gender-specific roles and toys (and colors) to our younger generation… ;)

    I know, I know … I’ll relax a little.

At least try! One day that boy will be bigger than me and he’ll be able to beat me up for calling him a tom-girl! :)

[...] I am happy to report that my man, Nathan is doing fine, despite some concerns we’ve had in the past. Now, when we asked him what he wanted for his birthday, he proudly said, “I want a tool set!” And my response??? “YES!!!!!!!!!!! (w/a deep voice!)” [...]
