Conversation w/Kailey in the car on our way to church this morning:
Kailey: I can’t wait for the Easter bunny to come.
Me: What! What Easter bunny? There is no Easter bunny.
Kailey: [silence]
Me: Kailey, the Easter bunny is pretend. There is no such thing as an Easter bunny. Do you know what Easter is?
Kailey: No.
Me: Do you know why we went to church yesterday? It’s because Jesus died on the cross.
Kailey: For our sins?
Me: Right, Kailey. He died on the cross for us for our sins.
Kailey: Who put him on the cross?
Me: [Long Pause ... thinking, I know the theological answer ... how can I make a 6 year old understand] Some bad people.
Kailey: Did they tie him up on the cross?
Me: Yeah, they did but they also put nails in his hands. That must have really hurt Jesus, huh?
Kailey: Yeah, it’s like when we get a shot at the doctors. Nathan got a shot and he was scared.
Me: [Pause] Yeah.
As elementary her understanding of Christ pain, suffering and death is to my understanding, I wonder how much more elementary my understanding is than God’s!
Thanks God for that reminder, that even though I THINK I know how much you endured for us to have life, that I’ll never know how much it cost, to see my sins upon that cross.
