Got back from a conference that I attended on Monday-Wednesday in Atlanta called Drive Conference ‘05. It was held at North Point Community Church where Andy Stanley is the senior pastor. It was incredible. I would have to say, one of the best conferences that I have been to, and I’ve been to quite a few … but I’m biased because Andy is my favorite pastor/preacher (who I finally met)!
I’m sure that I’ll post more about what I learned at the conference in future posts but here are some initial thoughts and takeaways from a major point that I took away from the conference:
Relevance is the key in leading a church that reaches people rather than keeps people.
- I subscribed to Relevant Magazine. What’s Relevant Magazine? This is who they say they are:
We’re twentysomething Christians. We want to break stereotypes, challenge status-quo and enact change through the media. We’re seeking God, living life and striving to impact the world around us. We are a multimedia company whose purpose is to impact culture and show that a relationship with God is relevant and essential to a fulfilled life.
- I changed all my radio station presets to secular rock and hip-hop stations for relevance.
- I am gonna be a student of leadership. I want to do a leadership tip once a week on my blog. Mainly for myself … if I commit to doing it every week, I will HAVE to read and find a leadership tip to share and that will force me to be a student of leadership.
- I am committing to the honing the art of communication. Learning to communicate and present engaging content in a relevant context. As painful as it is, study my messages and listen and watch them over and over for the sake of being a better communicator.
These are just some of the commitments I’ve made since returning from Drive ‘05.
Hey, you were back in Atlanta! Good stuff. Glad it was a good trip back.
Hey, I was there with you.
I like your thoughts. I’m going to make some committments like that.
Thanks for spurring me on.
Sounds like it was a great conference - thanks for your thoughts!
