I got back from a PK Retreat (Monday-Tuesday) that Young Nak Church sponsored for the second year. What’s a PK retreat? What’s a PK? PK usually stands for Pastor’s Kid or Preacher’s Kid. So, a PK retreat is a retreat for Pastor’s kids. Someone asked, “Why they need a retreat for themselves?” Well, it wasn’t only a PK retreat, but a retreat for the Pastor’s families too.
I was the guest speaker for the PKs and Rev. Rim (Young Nak Church’s Senior Pastor) was the guest speaker for the Pastors.
It was a great time for me, as I am a PK and I was able to communicate and share my experiences with them. I talked about the reality that Pastors families live in glass houses or are like a fish in a fishbowl, where everyone is watching them. And because they are being watched, it’s so easy to become performance oriented. Because we are PKs, we feel like we have to act a certain way. I made the point that that had implications on our relationship with God … that it’s easy for PKs to turn performance oriented in their walk with God and forget about the grace that He gives us. I reminded them that He accepts us, as is. I challenged them to use those glass houses as a way to live a life of influence, where we would be great witness as salt and light.
It was a great reminder to me about my upbringing as well as a reminder that my kids are PKs and I am called to teach them that they do not need “perform” or “act.” There were many PKs that were able to share their hurts and pains with their groups and I know God was healing and restoring them. Praise God!
I challenge you to not only pray for your pastors but for their families.
| God, thanks for the reminder that you accept us as we are. Thanks for pastors and especially their children. May you be with them in all their pressures and pain, that the only One that they need to please is You. Remind them that when You see them in the glass houses, You are admiring them! |
