Renovation
At a retreat that I spoke at recently, I mentioned that there are three things true with all home renovation:
- It’s always messy
- It always takes longer than you think it will
- After it’s all done, you’re glad you did it
Well, we have been in home renovation for the past 2 months. Since then, we have installed an over-the-range microwave, installed a new kitchen faucet, caulked the kitchen and every bathroom, stripped the wallpaper in our kitchen, freshly painted every inch of every wall that we own and, of course, declutter! And in these past 2 months, those three things were true all the way. It was messy and I was regretting it the whole thing through. BUT, in the end, we are so glad that we did. Wow, it was really worth going to bed at 2-3am for so many nights. What’s incredible is that, I would say that 80% of the work was all done by my wife!
Here’s some pics:

I learned so many lessons during this renovation:
- When painting, I did the roller and broad stokes and Kathy did the edges and detail work. Both were needed and we had a hard time doing the other’s part. Maybe some are gifted to paint the big picture and others are called to fill in the details.
- Less is more … live clean … live simply … declutter your life
- My faith is a work-in-progress (renovation of the heart). When God is working on something in me, it’s always messy and it’s much longer than I thought. But, when I look back, I’m so glad He did.
- My wife is an amazing woman!
God, as you have taught us and led us, we trust that you will continue to lead us. We trust that You are in control … even of a house that’s on the market at the “wrong time.” We eagerly await to be in the community once again where we will belong and become all You want us to be. Lead us!

yeah! your wife is an amazing woman. right on!
Your house looks great! It looks right out of an HGTV show.
Wow, looks amazing! I’m impressed.
I agree – live with less. I heard someone on a CD encourage people to throw away or give away 1/3 of what they own. I think its almost possible for me. I’m trying.
Good words from the retreat.
Hey Kye,
I don’t know if you remember me but I attended your youth group when you were in Richmond. I hung out with Robert Lee and John Yi…ummm…what else…I drove your car down to Atlanta to help you and Rob move. Anyways, I was just down visiting Rob and we were strollin down memory lane. RKPC youth group…good ol days. Well, I finished my seminary education and am currently in NYC attending Redeemer Presybterian Church. Crazy…I never thought I would go to seminary. Anyways, thank you for your years for faithful service and your patience in dealing with high school students in Richmond. Drop me an email and let me know what you’re up to when you have the chance. Alright…take care and God bless!
