Finally, it’s been done. There has been a contest that people donated to (total of $13,000), for someone to find a way to install Windows XP on the new Intel Macs (iMac or MacBook Pro or Mac Mini) and the contest is over. If you have a new Intel Mac and are patient enough to try, here are the instructions.
This is the ideal system: The hardware of Apple and being able to dual boot to Mac OS X and Windows XP.
I SO want to do this … now ...

Ok, so now you’ve got Firefox 1.5. What next? Well, one of the great benefits of having Firefox over Internet Explorer or Safari is for the extensions. There are three great extensions that EVERY Firefox user (Mac or PC) should install.

1) SessionSaver – One of the greatest features of Firefox are the tabs. If you’re not using tabs on Firefox, you haven’t even discovered the beauty of it. So, you use tabs. But has this ever happened to you? You have been surfing the net and have about 5-10 tabs open and you want to restart your computer OR someone closes your browser and you lose all of the tabs (opened sites). Enter SessionSaver extension. This will save all those tabs so that the next time you open Firefox, everything is right there. Neat!

2) Adblock – This is a must have extension with so many ads and popups/popunders out there on the net these days. It’s really hard to tell what is content and what are ads on some of these sites. Adblock is the extension that blocks it out for you. You’ll be amazed at how clean your web surfing will be without ads (even checking your webmail)!!! But, you can’t just use Adblock by itself.

3) Filterset.G Updater – With Adblock, I used to manually block things out when I saw them or other people use a list acquired from somewhere to block out most ads. This extension automatically downloads the latest list of ad sites and will import them into Adblock for you automatically and behind the scenes. Nice!

There are other extensions that I use (SearchKeys, FoxyTunes, etc.), but those 3 are a MUST.

Anyone else recommend any other extensions?

I’ve been using the new 1.5 version from release candidate 1-3 and I feel it’s much faster. They fixed many security leaks and made many different changes under the hood. So, you won’t see ...

Microsoft bought out another company that had an antispyware software and just put their name on it (like the Honda Passport was just an Isuzu Rodeo), but they did pick one of the best ones to buy out. Gotta give them credit for that! This one finds stuff that Ad-aware and Spy Bot didn’t catch. And I like the real-time scan on it.

So, I’m adding another requirement for any PC that I fix: you have to be running this program. If you are doing the first requirement (using Firefox), then you shouldn’t have too much spyware on your computer, but spyware comes from installing programs and stuff that Firefox doesn’t block. So, use it.

Download here and install it now!

Definitely Trillian. I have been using Trillian on the PC side for many years (before even version 1) and they have done a GREAT job on Version 3.0. It’s definitely the best multi-platform chat program on the PC side and with this new version, they have added many new features. Some features include Activity Monitor, Instant Lookup (real cool), Metacontacts (just like Adium), Tabbed chat windows (like Adium), Video/Audio chat and then my favorite feature, Rendezvous. What is Rendezvous? Well, you probably won’t use it … but it’s an Apple network protocol. So, you can use a serverless IM, basically an intranet chat system that’s cross-platform. This is the first PC software that is compatible with the Rendezvous that Panther on the MAC uses (on iChat and Adium). So, now, in the office, we can connect everyone via internal network and communicate via chat without enabling internet.

Anyway, I HIGHLY recommend Trillian on the PC, especially if you use more than one chat client.

I’ve uploaded to my server so that you have NO problems downloading it:

Ok, the MAC and PC gap is definitely becoming smaller. Konfabulator, one of my favorite applications for the MAC has gone cross-platform today. What a day for software releases!

So, what is Konfabulator? Their slogan is “whatever you want it to be.” And that’s true. It’s not so much an application as it is a platform for new applications called widgets. There are HUNDREDS of widgets and they are very nice looking graphics that sit on your desktop and give you information … like weather, calendar, news, etc. There are also many widgets that control different applications, like iTunes.

Most widgets are completely compatible on MAC and PC, which is cool. Now I can see the familar widgets that I use on my MAC on my PC (and even further confuse me on whether I’m on my MAC or PC!).

You should really try out this program and look through the widgets gallery. Some of my favorite widgets are the MiniWeather, FTP mini Drop, iTunes Remote, MailMan, and Memorize. Let me know if you start using it and what your favorite widgets are.

Want your PC to look like a MAC? Here’s a screenshot of my PC. I call it Mac XP! Pretty nice, eh? There’s a couple of programs that you need to run. You need Mobydock for the dock on the bottom of the screen. You also need WindowBlinds with the Mac Panther theme.

For the calendar on the desktop, you need a great little program called Rainlender. I changed my default skin on it to Shadow3 (English).

Ok, one more program (I know, I know, it’s a lot … but, if you just want one effect, you can do that by just installing the program that you need for your look). The drop shadows of the windows are a nice look on the MAC and it’s great to finally have it on the PC. It’s so aesthetically nice! The program is called Yzshadow.

One more thing (not program) … if you really want it to look like a MAC, you gotta have one of those nice nature desktop backgrounds or that aqua blue background. So, here are some backgrounds to use.

Oh, and if you use Trillian, here’s a skin for it to look like iChat on the MAC. It’s sweet! Although it will NEVER come close to Adium!

Ok, now I want screenshots of your desktop! Post it in the comments!

If you want more info and programs about this, go here.

Speed up load time
• Firefox is slow to load initially on Windows XP. You can speed this up a bit by using XP’s built in prefetcher. Simply right-click on the Firefox icon you use to start the browser. Add the text /Prefetch:1 to the end of the line in the target field.
The whole line should look something like the following:
“C:Program FilesMozilla Firefoxfirefox.exe” /Prefetch:1
