Korean Restaurants in LA

Because I’m from LA, I get the question all the time, “I’m going to LA this week, what Korean restaurants do you recommend?” I’ve had some in an email that I usually respond to, but it’s migrated it’s way to my Evernote and now, I’m making it public on my blog so that I can just refer people to this link. These are the restaurants that I would recommend for people to visit when they are there. There might be other newer, better options, but these are the classics (for me).

The Corner Place (Gilmok) – known for their dong-chee-mee noodle and dwehgi bulgogi/kalbi

Gui Mok – known for their dome shaped grill that they cook sam gup sil with a mote of kimchee jigae around it

Dong Il Jang – known for their ros gui and their eun da gu jo rim. they do fried rice with ros gui afterwards!

Chosun Galbi – the marinated galbi is one of the best, although very pricey.

I Love Chick-fil-A

My favorite fast food place has always been Chick-fil-A. But being in California for 7-8 years, I missed it so much. In fact, there was only one place (in Torrance) that was pretty far from church and home and so whenever someone was driving from there to church, we would always tell them to pick up some chicken sandwiches. Well now, living in Texas, there are as many Chick-fil-A’s as there are McDonald’s. And although I miss In-n-Out and the double-double from Cali, I’ll take Chick-fil-A anyday. So would Tim Hawkins:

How to Grill Brazilian BBQ (Churrasco)

Since we’ve move to Texas, we’ve had many guests over our home (averaging probably around a guest a week). One popular dinner menu item is when we cook Brazilian BBQ (Churrasco). Many people have never had it before. So, I’ve gotten a couple of requests on how we make it and just decided to do a video while I was cooking for our Superbowl LifeGroup get-to-gether yesterday. It’s SO easy, it almost doesn’t need a video, but you’ll see that in the video. In fact, it’s so easy, you’ll be surprised at how good it taste with little work.

Some of Helpful Tips:

Costco does have the best meat. I’ve tried many grocery stores and even Sam’s Club … but Costco’s quality is very good for it’s price
The rock salt (ice cream salt) is available at most grocery stores
If you are doing ribeyes and tri tip at the same time, try to separate them on your grill. Because there’s more fat in the ribeye (that’s why it tastes so good!), it tends to flare up, so you have to manage your fire. Make sure that it doesn’t char on the outside and it’s not done on the inside. I just cut into the middle of the meat to see if it’s done.
A small slice of butter on the ribeye makes it even more tender.
As mentioned in the video, my wife makes some mango salsa and you put it on the meat. The citrus taste balances the salt taste on the meat, and tastes pretty good.
When serving a lot of people, it’s better to cut it up in smaller pieces and let people take as many pieces as they want, rather than getting a big uncut steak.

Marshmallow Catapult Project

We got an email for Kailey’s teacher about a project:

Monday we are going to begin learning about simple machines. What I need from you is to help your child make a catapult for a large marshmallow launching competition. This is due May 30th. On that day we will hold our competition on the black top behind the school. I’ll let you know what time we decide later. It’s fun to watch so I hope you can come! You can search on the internet for ideas on your catapult. I went to Google and searched for images to get ideas. You can also do a plain google for instructions. PLEASE DONT FEEL LIKE YOU HAVE TO HAVE ANYTHING FANCY!!!!!! Just have fun making it with your child. I only ask that they aren’t huge. If your child can’t carry it to class by themselves then it is too big. HAVE FUN!!!

So, here’s our marshmallow catapult and even had to test it out!

You think we got a shot at winning??? I love my son’s pump fist at the end.

A New Hobby

As if I didn’t need another hobby or interest, I have developed one. I got a nice DSLR camera for Christmas and have been playing with it every spare minute I have. Since our kids are now older (youngest is now 5), I stopped taking pictures a while ago. But now, we have a surge of family pics and other random things around the house. It really is a lot of fun. Even though I took photography in college and also took like half of the pics in my college yearbook, I had to brush up a LOT. Plus, it’s so different now since you can experiment and it costs you nothing! So, my goal is just to take lots of pics and get better and better. Here’s some pics that I’ve taken recently:

Emily and Her iMac
