I don’t know if you set any resolutions for this year, but when my kids woke up early on January 1st, I asked them to write down 10 things that they resolve to change in the new year and email them to me. This is what they wrote down:

Besides the fact that they were a little similar to one another, I noticed something in the language that they used. For my youngest, most of the things that he wrote were things that he was NOT going to do, where as for my oldest, most of the things that she wrote were things she WANTED to do. And maybe that’s because we internally know that it’s not just helpful to stop doing something, as much as it is to start doing something. That a bad habit or behavior needs to be replaced with a good one, or it will be hard to quit. But there’s another thing that I noticed. The younger the child, the more definitive the goal was, but the oldest one started almost every resolution with “try.” And when I saw that, there was something that I identified with. Because the older you are, the more you know yourself, and the more you know that every year, you want to change, but it’s difficult. And so, instead of making any definitive promises, we say we’ll try it, if we make any at all.

It was a reminder that as we get older, we don’t believe that we can change. And it was a reminder that we can only change by the grace of God.

Lord, please give me the wisdom to believe that I can change and the courage to actually change.

Our desire is that this day would be far more than a single time of service, or something we do just once or twice a year. We want this event to be a springboard and platform to inspire and stir us towards service as a way of life. We know that God cares deeply for the poor and the needy of our city, and He has called His people to be the channels of His love, compassion, and mercy. The needs of our city are great, but we believe that God has given us an incredible opportunity to visibly and tangibly reflect His heart for our communities. Micah 6:8 reads, “He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God.”

Do Justice Dallas desires to be part of a movement of doing justice by serving the community in the Dallas/Fort Worth area being compelled by the love of Christ.

Yep, that’s my Emily! This video also has a clip of Nathan and Emily, except it doesn’t start and end with my kids. Maybe that’s why I like the first one better? =)

Well, both are done very professionally and emphasize an important theme that our kids need us, especially in their earlier years. And we have this video for my kids to show their friends and tell them that they are famous … but more importantly, Kathy and I have this video to remind us that our kids need us to point them to Christ, when no one else will.

I’ll Need You Video:

So, yesterday, I got a letter in the mail and it was from the Richardson Police Department … uh oh. When I opened it, I saw that it was one of those red light photos. These were the photos (my Honda on the right lane):

I really didn’t remember that day, but looking at these photos, I didn’t run the red light. In fact, I was turning right, so I wasn’t going THROUGH the light, how did I run it? In fact, looking at that second picture, my brake lights clearly show that I stopped before turning right. So, how can pictures prove that I didn’t make a full stop before turning right?

I turned the paper over to see what I was to do to protest this thing. And then I see that I can go online and see the pictures. I log in and I see this:

My daughter was looking over my shoulder and shouted, “you DIDN’T stop!” That was good enough for me to write the $75 and send it in.

I later realized why I was in such a hurry. I was heading to church for our “Do Justice” event and I was running late because I picked up 3 travelers of Starbucks coffee. Well, I got to church on time, but justice was definitely done here.

If you haven’t heard, Louie Giglio is starting a church in Atlanta called Passion City Church with Chris Tomlin, Matt Redman and Christy Nockels. And the interesting thing in all this is … Andy Stanley (pastor of North Point) and Louie Giglio are very good friends.
So, how are they dealing with this? Do they see it as a competition? How will they support one another? Well, they just did a podcast together and there were some honest reflections. This is part one, and part two and three will be coming … I”ll embed them here when they come out.
First game of the season and Emily got “Player of the Game!”

This season’s coach is pretty intense and knows his drills. I think Emily will improve a lot during this season. She’s pretty stoked tonight. Last season, we had the nicest coach, but not so good in coaching. Was thinking … do I want a nice and encouraging coach and have a losing season? Or an intense and intimidating coach with a winning season? How about a nice and encouraging coach AND a winning ...

My favorite fast food place has always been Chick-fil-A. But being in California for 7-8 years, I missed it so much. In fact, there was only one place (in Torrance) that was pretty far from church and home and so whenever someone was driving from there to church, we would always tell them to pick up some chicken sandwiches. Well now, living in Texas, there are as many Chick-fil-A’s as there are McDonald’s. And although I miss In-n-Out and the double-double from Cali, I’ll take Chick-fil-A ...

In fact, there was only one place (in Torrance) that was pretty far from church and home and so whenever someone was driving from there to church, we would always tell them to pick up some chicken sandwiches. Well now, living in Texas, there are as many Chick-fil-A’s as there are McDonald’s. And although I miss In-n-Out and the double-double from Cali, I’ll take Chick-fil-A anyday. So would Tim Hawkins:

EDIT: The other reasons why I love Chick-fil-A are the same reasons why I love North Point Ministries. Check this post out from Jeff Henderson who worked at both organizations and compared the two.

Yesterday, there was a school open house night where we go and visit the teachers and classrooms. We went to all of our kid’s classrooms. On each of their desks, they all had projects and drawings that we flipped through. I took a picture of one that caught my eye on Emily’s desk.

Someone who encourages me: Mom
My role model: Dad

Very cool. Except, when I asked Emily, “What a role model?” she said, “I don’t know.” Great.
Anyway, also on each of their desks ...

Very cool. Except, when I asked Emily, “What a role model?” she said, “I don’t know.” Great.

Anyway, also on each of their desks were journals that they were to write in each day. As I started looking through them and saw what things they were writing in it, I kinda got caught off-guard. They wrote the things that they did at home and what mommy and daddy did or didn’t let them do. And I was thinking, man, they remember EVERYTHING! And they are writing everything down! I better be careful or else they might write something bad about me!

Then it hit me … that’s what God was telling the Israelites to do. To impress on their children the ways of God and write them on the tablet of their hearts. I really need to be that role model for my children by living out God’s ways in me so that it impresses upon their hearts … because they remember EVERYTHING. And so, when they are writing in their journals, that they would write what has been written on their hearts.

God, teach me to be a godly parent to my children as you model perfect Fatherhood for me.
